How do I stand out at practice so the coach will pick me?

Question
Hey Tom,
Previously this year, before club tryouts, I asked you a question about tryouts(I made a team YAY). Now i have a question about being a libero.  There are two people on my team that want to be libero, me and another girl.  Our coaches only have to more practices to decide who is the libero, so what are some ways I can stand out and some things that a good libero always does, so my coaches will pick me? Thanks, Erin

Answer
Good morning Erin and welcome back!

I'm sorry that I'm slow in answering, but my team was in Richmond, Va all weekend at a tournament.  We finished 14th of the 56 teams in our age group!  It was a great weekend!

How will your coach decide who will be his starting libero?
a# which one of you is the most skilled?  Last year on my National team, I had 2 girls who were both very good.  However, neither of them really separated herself from the other.  Your job is to show the coach #if you can do it!) that there is a difference between you and her.
b) Hustle your butt off, especially on those plays where you think hustling doesn't matter that much.  For example, when a ball appears to be going out, do you follow it to the line, or do you just watch it and hope?  For example, when one of your teammates looks like she may be getting aced, do you stand and watch her? or do you start moving to back her up?  For example, after you pass a ball to your setter, do you stand and watch her set the ball, or are you moving forward really to cover and help in any way you can?
c) Your attitude should be outstanding!  Listen %26 make eye-contact with your coach. Touch %26 encourage your teammates, especially the other girl who may be the libero.  This will show you care more about the team than yourself!

That's about all I think of that will help you.  I also thought about volunteering to bring a treat after practice, having the team over to your house, bringing stuff to make hair ribbons, etc.  But if you coach is like me, he'll appreciate you doing all that stuff, but won't give you more playing time b/c of it.  At least, I sure hope he doesn't, b/c if he does, then everyone on the team will start sucking up to him.  That's not good at all!

I see that you have another question.  I will answer it shortly.  Have a great week at school.
