Fall Bass Spawning in Kentucky: Causes & Explanations

Question
We have a small pond here in KY. Yesterday, we caught a large mouth bass that was full of eggs. We were under the impression that bass only spawned in spring and were wondering why this is happening and if its normal. Could it be that there was a cold snap and then it warmed back out? Thanks

Answer
Hi Megan,

It is one of two possibilities.  One, it is eggs that they didn't lay from last spring and she hasn't absorbed them.  If things aren't right, they don't spawn and absorb the eggs like fat.

Two, these are eggs that are developing for next spring already.  It seems early, but probably not for your region where they probably spawn in March.

Or it could just be a freak that it's body clock is way off.

Good fishing,

Marc
