Nostalgic Reflections on Carp Fishing: A Look Back
Question
actually a comment. Not sure why carp fishing is just
catching on. As a boy, I grew up in Moline Illinois in the
50's and 60's. I went fishing almost every day during the
summer riding my bike to either the Rock River or
Mississippi. We often would catch 40 or 50 fish in a
morning. Green Giant Niblets were the best bait - though a
few old timers swore by Wheaties and vanilla formed into
doughballs. I disagree that pound for pound carp are the
best fighting fish. White bass are - although they don't
grow to near the size carp do. Also catfish, under 5 lbs
will match a carp for fun. Also, even though it is often
thought of as a trash fish because of the number of bones,
many people in my area would smoke them - making it
flavorful and much easier to remove the bones.
Answer
Corn & Wheaties have always been KILLER baits, hard to choose but I'd go with the CORN,,,as far as pound for pound fighting, I would assume that would depend on the health of the fish, and the tackle used,,, we could debate that for hours, however I;ve never experienced a fight like the one a carp will give you, especially on light tackle, and the oftentimes great runs as they approach the net is nothing short of heart stopping,,thanks for your comments,,,,,
