Question
I will be fishing as a "co-angler" at the Weekend Series regional tour. the middle of Oct. I want be able to pre fish so I was hoping for some info. on what to bring and what to fish out of the back of the boat. Thanks for any help you could give me.

Answer
Ed; By mid October I hope it will be cooler. It has been a scorcher this summer.  Of course October is one of those in between months, meaning that it can be summer yet but it can bee cold sometimes.  If we have some early cool spells and the water cools down I would fish the stump beds that used to be standing timber.  There are several areas around the lake where these exist.  Years ago these were standing trees but most have broken off now in many places.  My area in the Spring Creek arm is full of these.  By that time I would try using a fairly large soft plastic swim bait and cast around the stumps.  There are lots of logs etc on the bottom in these areas so a weedless bait would help.  A crankbait with shad coloring or a spinnerbait with some white and some greenish color in the skirt is often good.  Another good lure in this area and time of year is a large 10" dark colored worm.  I like June bug or dark purple in this lake.

It would help if I knew where you were staying during practice then I could be more specific about where you might fish.  Why don't you give me a call when you come for practice and let me know more about where you are staying and where you are launching your boat. I will give you my number below.

If it is still hot and the water temp is still high you might want to try some deeper water.  One place that is sometimes good is down near the mouth of Spring Creek where it joins the Flint river.  I have had some luck there at times.  For me hot weather means late or early.  I don't usually go out until the Sun is treetop level.  I realize this can't be in a tournament though so you will have to make do with what hours you are allowed.  If it is hot work deeper usually.  However there are times even when it is hot the bass will be shallow in the pads so don't pass them up hot or cool.  When fishing pads I like a big worm  or a Johnson Silver Minnow with a frog pork (not plastic)frog.  Work either of these through the pads keeping your rod tip high to keep much of your line out of the water so you don't catch pads.  When you get a strike wait until the fish loads up your rod before striking then work to get the fish coming out of the pads. I think I will go back to using a plastic frog again. I used to have one and caught dome good fish on it.

I just re read your question about what to bring.  I am not sure what you mean.  Of course bring rods and reels good enough to handle bass up to ten pounds with good line.  As far as lures I have mentioned but also bring other types you have had success on before.

I hope this has been of some help.  If you contact me when you are coming maybe by that time I can be more specific as I will know more about the weather and water temps etc.  Thanks for calling on me to answer your question
