Heddon #17 9ft Fly Rod - Value & Details (1939-1951)

Question

Heddon #17 Rod
I have a Heddon #17 9ft Fly Fishing Rod.  Has Heddon signed on rod.  Has 4 sections.  Cork handle is a little rough otherwise in good condition.  I have the cardboard tube and flannel case.  Tube is rough and case is in good condition.  What would be the value of this rod???

Answer
Gloria,
The markings on your rod tell me 1939 to 1951 according to Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair.
I am getting the prices from Antique %26 Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997. You can probably find it in your local library.
The  model #17 aka "Black Beauty" at 8/12 feet has an extra tip valued at  $75, 165 and $300 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. The book is 10 years old so a 30% increase is not too far off. I see your rod is 9 foot , smaller  rods have a higher  value.

Classic %26 Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors %26 Anglers by A.J. Campbell gives us the end date when Heddon stopped making bamboo rods as 1958.

Luck,
Mac
