RL Winston bamboo flyrod

Question
Rich,
I have come into possession of an RL Winston bamboo flyrod.  It is 9'6", two piece, bakelite spacer, 5 5/8 oz., full wells grip, flap-ring keeper, etc.  The rod has a tip (end guide) which comes off and has two rusted out guides.  There is some damage to the cork grip.  It is marked "Made for Dan Johnson by RL Winston 9'6 5 5/8 oz. #6133".  I am wondering what an approximate value may be.  What is the best way to get a full appraisal and then to sell the rod?  Thanks

Answer
Jeff,
Winston rod company is still in business , http://www.winstonrods.com/ on the web.
History of the company: http://www.winstonrods.com/history.html

I recommend you call Winston 406.684.5674, for a date and e-mail me [email protected] with the results. I don't think there is a date scheme imbedded in the serial number like many manufactures but they keep a list, not on on the computer or not shared anyway.
According to Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book ; the 9.5 ft model RL Winston Tournament fly rod circa 1955, 2 piece no extra tip, is valued at  $150, 395 and $695 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Your rod may not be a Tornament model and the prices may not apply at all but give you an impression only not even close to an approximate  value.

From your brief description I am assuming the rod is not in excellent condition and may be poor. I can bring the value up on the rod by refinishing or at least reglue the tip top back on the tip.

The best way to sell the rod is to have a knowledgable  write up  by a person who has lots of contacts and networks such as myself. [email protected]
Also you will get more money by selling it at the beginning of the fishing season or Christmas.

Email me your phone number and we can talk if you like.
Luck,
Mac
