crank baits/ line twist

Question
I am a avid crank bait fisherman. My question is after a good days fishing I get bad line twist with my spinning reels( the only thing I use ) Is there a certain knot I should use or a small swivel I have been told that is not for crank baits. Any advice ?

Answer
Hi Bob,

Yes, generally I'd say not to use a swivel either.  But, hard pulling baits are sometimes a problem with spinning gear.  I'd say, go ahead and use a small quality swivel like a #6 Spro.  Something like that won't kill the action.

I'd also like to mention to check the line roller on the reel.  If it's not rolling properly, that will cause line twist.  It may not be a problem with something that doesn't offer a lot of resistance.  But, with cranks, the problem could be magnified.  It's generally one screw that holds the assembly together.  Open that up, clean all the gunk off all the parts, and put it back together with a light oil (Not WD-40).  That will also help your problem.

Good fishing!

Marc
