Spinning of the reel.

Question
I have an ugly stick.  When I reel my line in it wraps some time to low causing it to tangle at the bottom under where the line goes. And one more thing.  I fish in Lake Erie.  What is the best way to use a spreader.  I fish for Perch or Walleye.

Answer
Hi Mike,

It sounds like the line is wrapping down below where it should and on to the skirt of the spool.  Needless to say, that should never happen.

I don't know what reel you have, but make sure that the spool is seated on the shaft properly.  The line should never have the chance to get that low on the spool so either the spool is sitting too high on the shaft for some reason, or the shaft has moved from it's connection point on the gearing.  I think you may need someone at a reel repair shop look at it.

The spreader rig is used for perch.  You can rig them up with two minnows.  Attach a 1 ounce bell sinker below and drop it straight to the bottom.  Tighten up the line and watch your rod tip for the strike.

Good fishing!
