rod handles

Question
have vintage steel rod handles that need replaced along w caps for end  any ideas  thx

Answer
Hi Roy,

I am guessing that you need to replace the cork handles on old steel rods?  It shouldn't be too bad.  I am also guessing that you need to replace the rear grips.  Fore grips (in front of the reel seat# will be a challenge and would probably require removing the guides.

Bust off the old stuff and see what you have below.  Probably a metal shaft.  Check out a site like Mudhole.com and you will see many shapes of pre-glued cork handle. Butt caps too. You can pick from one of those or rebuild it with cork rings.  In either case, work the cork on from the end and finish it with a cap.  The center hole will need to be reamed to the correct diameter.  Everything can be glued with a good 30 minute #not 5 min.) epoxy.  If you use rings, it will have to be filed and sanded smooth.

If you haven't built rods before, check with a local club and they will show you a few techniques for adding cork= grips from the butt end.

Its not a bad job and I think you can do it.

If you send me a picture I may have some better ideas.

Thanks,

Marc
