Fifer Viking Cane Rod: Identification & Value - Vintage Fishing Rods
Question
I have come across a Fifer "Viking" rod which has Genuine Tonkin Cane and the number 4-9. It's a very stout casting rod with a chrome reel seat and nice cork handles. 6' in length with guides that have a red ceramic or plastic insert.
Is this a rare rod and what do you think is the value?
Thanks very much
Answer
Hi Steve,
Fifer appears to be, or to have been, a sporting goods retailer in Canada. My guess is that what you have is a private label rod made by Montague or Horrocks-Ibbotson for Fifer and labeled as a Fifer "Viking". The red inserts are agate; the reel seat is nickel/silver. I don't think it is particularly rare but I am not familiar with fifer or the volume of sales they may have done. Value would be in the $20-$100 range depending entirely on actual condition of the rod and any bag or tube that may have come with it.
Thanks, Joe
