Identifying & Valuing a Vintage 1921 Bamboo Fly Rod
Question
I recently purchased an old vintage split bamboo 9 ft fly rod that is 3 sections. It has a cylinder shaped canvas rod holder that has indents on the outside for the 3 rod sections to lay. On the holder material is written a date 7/27 1921. There is no markings on the rod sections. There are 10 eyelets with the 1st on on the main section containing what looks to be glass inserts and also the tip but all of the other 8 are small wire loops. There seems to be some patterning with the windings. Is it possible to identify the manufacturer? I have pictures I could send.
Answer
Hi David,
The timing (1920s) sounds about right given the form fit rod holder. The inserts in the guides are agate liners. Yes, it is often possible to tell the maker from pictures.
If you have some pictures, send them to me at joe@blackdogtackle.com and I'll review them for you.
Thanks, Joe
