Lateral Hazard no water

Question
A par four has red stakes up the right side along the tree line. 30 yards behind the red stakes is a iron post fence with private property on the other side. I slice my drive right and cannot find the ball. It may or may not have gone over the fence. Can I play it as a lateral hazard and drop it where it crossed with penalty?

Answer
Hi Mitch,

Usually, when a golf course has red stakes down the side of a hole which has a boundary, the purpose is to increase the speed of play (golfers don't need to hit a provisional ball or return to the tee to replay).

I would play it as a lateral hazard and assume the ball is in it.

There might even be a special rule listed on the score card.

Hope this helps.
