length of clubs

Question
I am a short golfer... 5'4".  I've asked my local pro if I should use shorter clubs but he said that I shouldn't but just get them flattened.  I was wondering what you think?

Answer
Hi John:

I am 5'2" John.  I use standard length clubs, always have, and my driver is a half inch longer than standard.  I believe it's what you can handle.  I would say standard is fine, unless you have bad directional problems.  A shorter shaft will help directional control, but it also costs you a little distance.  However, he is right when he tells you to check your lie angles.  That is more important to me than shorter shafts.  Your lie angles have to be perfect (for you).  At 150 yards, if the lie angle of say your 6 iron is off one degree, you'll miss your target by 20 feet, all no fault of your swing.  Get your lie angles fit for you, stay at standard and go play golf.
