Breaststroke kick doesnt work

Question
Hi,

I am new at swimming. I have tried using the breaststroke kick, but it provides no propulsion at all. Whats wrong with my technique?

Note: I have tried as it is  written in articles on the web, but still it provides no propulsion. And my coaches here are not helpful, so cant count on them.

Answer
Hi, hope I can help.

A lot of people don't get the breaststroke kick correct. It can be difficult to get right, especially since I can only write about it.

Here's what you are some tips...

1. You need to turn your feet out so the point to the side. If you can stand with your heels about six inches apart and point your feet 180 degrees to the side this gives you the proper idea.

2. The pressure of the water needs to be on the inside portion of the foot; not the top or bottom like in flutter kick.

3. Try practicing it on your back while holding a kickboard. This way you can look at your feet and make sure they are turning out.

4. Some old school instructors teach a wide kick and then you squeeze your legs together. This is wrong.

5. The feet come up to the hips. Then they turn out to the side. Then they kick almost straight back.

6. After they kick there should be propulsion and a glide.

I'll look for some youtube videos and if I find something that looks good, I'll send a follow up with links.

Btw, if you're learning to swim, I recommend using swim fins. They make swimming easier and let you focus on your breathing, relaxing and using your arms.
