back to breast turn in Individual Medley

Question
Hi

I have noticed that in back to breast turn in IM there are
few ways of turning, namely:
1. the flip turn, something like the freestyle turn
2. the backflip or reverse somersault, but I think this is
rarely used.
3. the open turn, like in butterfly or breaststroke turn
4. the spin turn, whereby you spin your body horizontally,
like the former old backstroke turn.

I like to know as general knowledge and to clear my
confusion, which turn is recommended and why so?

Have a nice day.

Signed

Matthew

Answer
Matthew--Of the 4 turns you listed, the spin turn and the flip turn are the most widely used.  They both have advantages and disadvantages. The backflip and open turn aren't really used at all any more.  With the spin turn you get through the turn quicker than the spin turn, but don't get an extra breath of air that you get with the spin turn.  With the spin turn you lose a little speed, but you do get that breath that I mentioned.
Which of these you use is personal preference, if you can do them efficiently.  They have both been used in national and international competitions, so the choice is up to the athlete.
Hope this helps,
George
