streamlined dolphin kicks

2016/7/15 11:57:52

Question
Hi, I need some really *effective* tips for learning streamlined dolphin kicks for the start of freestyle and backstroke. What is the key to get that whip movement of the body? I would go down to the bottom then surface, not able to go down again, even though I positioned my body like the professionals. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Bonnie--The key isn't to go too deep, you want to make sure you are in a streamlined position.  When you are first working on the dolphin kick, use your whole body and make the range of the kick fairly large(like you might see a dolphin do).  As you get use to doing the kick and it becomes more effective, start to limit the kick to your lower body(hips, knees and feet)and speed up the tempo.  Again, being streamlined and keeping a shallow angle to the surface are important and learning to have an effective, strong kick will help.
Hope this helps,
George
