help on move

Question
Hi, I lost against a kid because I couldn't stop this one move. When I would shoot a double leg take down he would sprawl and put in an underhook and cement mixer me to my back. Do you know how to stop it? Also I was unable to finish my shots. I would get in preety deep on my double but as I lifted and pushed to the right he would still be on his feet and not go down and then I'd just reset. I need help on that too thanks.

Answer
John,

You have to be setting up your shots correctly in order to get an effective takedown. Its the most important step for a takedown. If your opponent is able to get an underhook on your double then that is what I call a "gorilla" shot. Your arms are flailing wide, leaving a gap for your opponent to hook in. You have to be more compact, arms closer to your body then he won't be able to get an underhook in.

Here are some of your options:
A takedown is divided into the following steps:
Step 1 - Setup
Step 2 - Penetration
Step 3 - Clinch
Step 4 - Drive
Step 5 - Finish

Setups For Double Leg:
- Headsnap
- Elbow Off
- Elbow Pop
- Fake
- Arm Drag

Penetrations For Double Leg:
- Regular Drive Step
- Side Penetration (this is used for a Barzagar, for more advanced wrestlers. Its like your shooting a single leg except you clinch like a double.)
- Duck Double (you pull your opponent towards you at an explosive rate and duck down and grab his legs)

Clinch(s) For Double Leg
- Wrap around over the legs and your outside hand / palm goes into the ankle and your inside hand blocks the thigh. (more technical, more effective)
- Wrap your arm around his hip / waist. (less technical, no chance of him sprawling, but requires a lot of energy and is unorthodox but it works)

Drive(s) For Double Leg
- Make sure you drive at an 45 degree angle meaning diagonally instead of straight forward. (As your driving make sure your hips are under your opponent and your opponent doesn't plant a foot in the mat)

Explore those options. Make sure to ask critique from your coach as he is the one who can see you physically and he will better know what your doing wrong.
