Improving Wrestling Shot Penetration: A Guide for Young Wrestlers

Question
I am a ten year old wrestler and I am having problems with my shots.  When I was taught to take a penetration step I was shown to go to one knee the drive through.  I read about lowering your level and that it is a simple squat/bend at the knees. Is it possible for me to finish my shots and get good penetration by lowering my level, not necassarily touching a knee, and taking my shot?  What do you suggest I do to drill and improve this?

Thank you,

Johnathan

Answer
great question

there are nine coaching points to a shot.  Here they are;

inside control, clear the tie up, change levels, take a penetration step, knee touches the mat, trail leg flies to a strong position, head up, back straight, drive into your opponent.

If your head is on the outside you finish a double leg or high c, if your head is on the inside you finish a swing single or low level single.

If you can do all of those elements without touching the knee, then go ahead but the pressure of a good opponent on you during the shot will probably force your knee to the mat, even if only momentarily.

You can see more of what I am talking about at www.usasports.tv

I produced a training DVD with coach Kevin Jackson and he teaches it much better than I.

Good luck on the mats.
