Swimming is a skill that once you have perfected it can be a valuable lifesaver. Many people have struggled with swimming and have never found the courage to take the plunge (no pun intended) and actually learn how to swim properly. Swimming lessons used to be compulsory in most primary schools in the UK. However, due to lack of local government funding and minimum pressure from school governing boards swimming is no longer a major priority in schools. Therefore, in later life people go on to take it upon themselves to learn privately.

The best time to learn to swim is at a very young age, however it is never too late to start learning, there are more private swimming instructors than ever before. With professional lifeguards and qualified swimming instructors teaching adults young and old to swim like the professionals.

Swimming is not only a valuable skill to have for lifesaving purposes, it is also one of the best exercises and one of the most effective ways of losing weight and keeping fit. It is an excellent alternative to jogging, because that it is extremely low impact. Therefore, even people with joint problems can take part and experience the benefits of regular swimming.

The English are seen as being the first developed society to consider swimming a sport. By 1837 swimming competitions were taking place in six swimming pools around the country. As a result of this more and more pools were constructed to cater for the growing demand for this popular sporting activity. Swimming actually dates back to prehistoric times and some of the earliest records of swimming taking place are Stone Age carvings of men and women swimming. The first ever swimming book or manual was penned by a German professor Nikolaus Wynmann in 1578, entitled The Swimmer or A Dialogue on the Art of Swimming (Der Schwimmer oder ein Zwiegespr盲ch 眉ber die Schwimmkunst)

Over the years swimming has become so popular, and is still growing in popularity. When looking for a swimming instructor, one should always make sure that the instructor is fully qualified to teach unsupervised lessons for adults and or children. The most common qualifications are attained through the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) although there are other widely accepted qualifications to look out for. The ASA can give information on what to look out for when searching for a qualified swimming instructor.

Learning how to swim effectively has never been easier; however it is up to the individual to take that first step to becoming a better swimmer.

Totalimmersion.co.uk can provide the best swimming lessons, with instructors who teach you an easier way to swim, including freestyle swimming, with products available for purchase to help you along the way.
