For the large majority of people, learning how to swim is more of a "must do" rather than a choice. Learning how to swim at an early age provides much more benefits as it allows the child to possess a truly useful skill for a lifetime.

Sporting activity, leisurely event with friends and family or purely a form of exercise? Swimming takes many forms and can be performed all year round. However, the primary reason why most children learn to swim should be for health and safety reasons, not just for personal enjoyment.

Swimming in a swimming pool is one thing, however, there are other places that you can swim, places such as the sea, a river or a lake, places that can create danger at any moment due to them being natural water sources. This is why, learning to swim is essential for water safety, and should be treated with the utmost respect.

Learning how to swim will stand you in good stead when it comes to being around water. It is essential that a child learns basic techniques as learning how to float and to tread water, not just basic water safety, and learning should take place in a safe environment. Furthermore, when around any water source, no matter the swimming ability of the child, they must be under complete supervision at all times.

A further benefit of learning to swim from a young age is that it promotes physical development. A key element of swimming is that it requires the coordination and movement of both your arms and legs simultaneously, many other sports often do not. Other advantages that arise form learning to swim is that the thinking levels of the child will increases as swimming forces children to constantly think about their movements, it also aids the improvement of gross motor skills and coordination.

Swimming literally requires the use of every single muscle within the body, therefore it is without a doubt one of the best forms of exercise for you, it is great for improving fitness levels.

Furthermore, when swimming, there is no need to worry about it damaging the areas of the body such as your joints. The reason for this is because it is in water, therefore there is minimal impact on the body.

Learning to swim not only improves the cardiovascular health and strength of the child, it also teaches the commitment and good habits that they can use for the remainder of their life.

As mentioned earlier, swimming can take many forms such as a sporting event or a leisure activity. Therefore, swimming can be used as a prime social opportunity. Swimming lessons can be taught both individually and in a group, when being taught in a group however, it allows the children to become aware of others when swimming and also learn to wait their turn.

The earliest age possible is the best time for a child to learn to swim. It has been stated in a recent study, that most adults that didn't learn how to swim as a child develop a fear of water. Furthermore, children are a lot easier to teach as they don't have any preconceived notions as to how they should swim.
