Swim Techniques For Beginners

Swimming is an essential life skill and the following swim techniques for beginners serves as a basic guideline of how to teach swim techniques for beginners. Learning basic swimming techniques is the only way to be safe around water. People who do not know these swimming techniques are in danger any time they are near an unguarded stretch of water. These swim techniques for beginners are a great tool for anyone learning to swim or trying to teach someone to swim.

  1. Dead Man's Float Of all the swim techniques for beginners, this is the most basic for survival. Float face down. Yes, face down. Roll your head to breathe every twenty or so seconds. Conserve energy. Move only to stay afloat. This is not so much a swim technique for beginners as it is a survival tactic.
  2. Elementary Backstroke The elementary backstroke is among the most basic swim techniques for beginners. For this stroke, simply float on your back, kick your legs like a frog and propel your body with your arms. For your arms, use the chicken, airplane, soldier technique. Bring your arms to your armpits like a chicken, extend like an airplane and stoke down to your hips like a soldier.
  3. Modified Breaststroke This is another very basic swim technique for beginners. Use the frog kick in combination with broad breast strokes. This is only slightly better than the doggy paddle. Beginners should learn freestyle once they have mastered this stroke.
  4. Basic Freestyle This is one of the most basic freestyle swim techniques for beginners. Don’t lift your head. Instead, keep your face in the water and roll your head to breathe. You can practice this with a kickboard. Kick to keep your feet afloat. This is another one of the swim techniques for beginners that can be practiced with a kickboard. Make sure you don’t slap the water; this is inefficient. Rather than slapping the water, reach far in front of your body and pull your arm along your side towards your legs. Repeat this motion as smoothly as possible. Try to pull as much water as possible.
