Hayward D.E. Filter Pump Motor vs. Sand Motor: Compatibility & Risks

It is generally not advisable to swap a Hayward D.E. pool filter pump motor with a sand motor. While both types of motors are used in pool filter pumps, they have different specifications and requirements.

D.E. (diatomaceous earth) filters require a higher pressure pump than sand filters. This is because the D.E. filter media is finer than sand, so it creates more resistance to water flow. A sand motor is not designed to produce the same pressure as a D.E. motor, so using it with a D.E. filter could result in inadequate filtration and decreased efficiency.

Additionally, the plumbing connections for D.E. and sand filter pumps may be different. D.E. filters typically require a larger diameter plumbing line than sand filters. If the plumbing lines are not compatible, you may need to modify the piping to accommodate the new motor.
