Rabies and Swimming Pools: Understanding the Risk

Rabies transmission depends on the rabies virus coming in contact with nerve tissues after directly entering a wound. For this reason, it is not possible to transmit rabies through swimming pools. However, if a rabid animal bites someone in the pool and the skin is broken, there is a risk of rabies transmission.

The rabies virus is present in saliva, so it's essential to avoid contact with saliva from any potentially infected animal. If you're bitten or scratched by any animal that may be carrying rabies, seek medical attention promptly.
