setting the drag

Question
Hi, I was wondering how many pounds I should set my drag to compared to the line # test? I am currently using 8, 10, and 14# tests. And is there ever a time to change the drag setting while the fish is on the line?

Answer
Hi Brian,

You will get a feel at how tight the drag should be.  Set up the rod and reel and tie the line to an immovable object in the yard.  Now start pulling back on the rod like you are fighting a fish.  As the rod becomes fully loaded the line should start to creep off the drag.   That's probably pretty close to correct.

When you set the hook, the drag shouldn't quite slip.  But if a fish made a run at that point, it should be able to take line.

To answer your question, yes you always have to adjust the drag during a fight.  Maybe not panfish or a small bass, but definitely on bigger gamefish.  I always back way off when the fish gets close to the boat or shore.  Its at this point when you have a short line on the fish, when it's most likely it could make a quick run and pop your line.  In general, I keep my drags pretty tight and back off as soon as I know I have the fish hooked.  Then back off further when it nears the boat.

Also, remember to check your drag as the day goes along.  Changes in temperature and humidity can effect the drag system.  And back drags all the way off when storing reels.

There is no real way to set the "poundage" of drag.  It's more of a feel thing.  Make sure you can pull line off the reel at the reel and you will be ok.

Good fishing
