Spinning reel spools

Question
What is the difference between a graphite and an aluminum spool?  I have a few reels that have the option of an aluminum or graphite spool, on 1 of which has a noticable difference in line capacity, but I never fill a spool to capacity anyway.  Is there a difference in length of cast or another advantage?

Answer
Hi Jon,
The main difference between an aluminum and graphite spool is the weight.  A graphite is much lighter, and is usually the low capacity spool.  I'm surprized you received one of each with the reel.  It happens with some brands, but in most cases they are both of the same material.  The lower capacity spools are generally for lower pound test lines.

You mentioned not filling the spools all the way.  This is good, but you should take them to at least an 1/8 of an inch from the top edge.  I presume we are talking about open face spinning tackle.

Of course, if it is casting reels there is usually a line near the top of the spool that indicates the proper filling level.

If you have any other questions on this or other fishing subjects please don't hesitate to ask.

Best of fishing,
Dan
