Best Baits for Pier & Shore Fishing in Gulf Shores, Alabama

I am getting ready to go to Gulf Shores Alabama.  My girlfriends dad and I are going to try to fish there.  What kind of baits should we use for pier fishing and shore fishing?

Best bet is to contact a local bait and tackle shop, not a big discount sporting goods place, but a typical small ma and pop type opperation.  They can provide you with the best advice on what, where, and how for the specific place you intend to fish.  I have never fished that area, so anything I can say would only be of a general nature.
