Night Downrigger Fishing: Tips & Setup for Success

Question
Hello, I was wondering if you know if downrigger fishing at night is a waste of time and if not what would be a good set-up for this type of fishing? I was thinking of starting out with kwikfish or a flashy glow in the dark spoon. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Justin

Answer
Aloha Justin,

First of all I don't know where you are fishing. Second, I think you are refering to Freshwater fishing.
Generally speaking night fishing in both Freshwater & Saltwater can be really good. It depends on what fish you are targeting & where you are fishing. Also best when there is almost no moon.
I fish mostly at night but at depths down to 1500 feet, and I use "Downriggers" , actually they are big Fish Pullers I made myself, to be able to hold enough line. I also anchor, I do not troll with these very often. Only use them sometimes when we get into a big school of Skipjack Tuna's.
In Fresh water Black Worms do well at night, for casting for bass that is. Also we used to set out a "Trot Line" hanging between two trees with maybe 10 hooks on it, using Pork Rinds from a jar.
That about all I can tell you. If you want to write me where & what you are fishing for, then maybe I can help you out more.
