Question
I am training for the triathlon season and this is my second year as a triathlete. However, I have a terrible swim. I have power, but I have a hard time keeping a good stroke for more than two laps. I attempt to breath every 3rd stroke, I feel comfortable around the 2nd, I feel fatigued more than I feel I should. I am lucky I have a good run and Bike otherwise I would barely place. What are some tips? Also, do you have an 8 week program to prepare me for 1000 meter swims?

Answer
Tom-
Eight weeks isn't a very long time to train for that type of distance.  The best thing you can do is a lot of long distance swims.  Swim as long as you can non-stop each time you are able to get into a pool.  As for the breathing, even if you are breathing every third stroke, you should think about breathing the same as you do on land.  When your face is in the water you should be exhaling so when you turn your head to breath all you have to do is inhale.  It takes some practice to learn how much time you have to blow all your air out so that you can inhale a full breath when you turn your head.
The best thing to try to do to improve your endurance is to work on maximum distance per stroke, this will slow your strokes down(making the breathing easier) and saving you energy in the process.  If you are training in a pool count your strokes on your first lap and try to take fewer strokes per lap while still maintaining your speed and continue to try to take fewer strokes until your speed gets slower.
One arm pull equals one stroke.
Hope this helps,
George
