Broken set elements

Question
Hi Lanny

What is the purpose of sets that are made up of broken 200s or broken 150s? Can you give me a sample set as well please?

Answer
Hi Peter! It's Lanny. A broken set example might be 5 x 200 on an interval which gives a lot of rest (at least a minute between 200's) where you break the 200 into 4x50 with 10 seconds rest or 2x100 with a little more rest. These short rest breaks (10 seconds between the 50's) gives just enough time to regenerate the muscle energy compounds to swim at a faster pace.

Broken sets are therefore speed sets and give good anerobic conditoning as well as some aerobic conditioning. Because they are speed sets they should be used sparingly as doing this high intensity work daily would lead to overtraining...Lanny Schaffer... Exercise Physiologist...
