Three Essential Pool Landscaping Tips

When you create a pool landscaping that works will with your pool, youll have an at-home get-away spot that will bring you joy for many summers to come. Landscaping around a swimming pool doesnt have to been difficult, but its not something you want to do on the spur of the moment, either. Just one mistake and your beautiful swimming pool could turn into one big money pit. To make sure that doesnt happen to you, take a look at these pool landscape planning tips.

Choose good pool plants

The types of plants youre going to have around the pool is something youll want to give serious consideration to. Choose the wrong plants and you could end up with leaves and seedpods in your water or, worse, roots growing through the wall.

Before you decide to place any plant near your pool read up on it to make sure it wont interfere with your enjoyment of the pool. If it turns out the plant drops lots of debris like flowers or berries, has prickles or stickers, or attracts insects, dont use it.

Know your goals

When you decided to have a pool put in, you most likely had a clear idea of how youd use that pool. Where you dreaming of escaping from the world to lounge by the water? Were you planning late-night pool parties? Were you thinking of all the fun youd have playing pool sports with the kids? Before you even start looking at pictures of pool landscaping, think through the main activities youll be doing in and around the pool. What you want to spend your time doing there will be a major influence on how you need to landscape it.

Don't neglect the deck

The deck is a major part of any pool landscape and because its also requires a significant investment of time and money, its worth planning carefully. The first consideration is the material youll use to build the deck. Stone pavers, concrete, and wood are all common choices, but each has its own benefits and draw backs.

When youve got the deck installed, make sure you dont just let it sit there. A dull deck or patio can easily ruin the look of an otherwise beautiful poolscape. After all, you wont be spending all your time in the pool and even while youre swimming, you can still see that deck.

You may not want to go all out, but having a few Adirondack chairs and some trailing plants hanging from a basket will add a lot to the look of your poolside.

Professionals specializing in pool landscaping have their place, but if youre an avid gardener, theres no reason you can't plan your pool landscape yourself. Just take care to start with a goal in mind and carefully consider everything you place near the pool, including each plant.
