Troubleshooting a Non-Starting Hayward Pool Pump: On/Off Switch Check

Step 1: Confirm Power Supply

Ensure the pump is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the pool pump's power supply to ensure it's turned on and not tripped.

Step 2: Disconnect Power

For safety, turn off the power supply to the pump at the breaker or fuse box.

Step 3: Access On/Off Switch

Locate the on/off switch for the pool pump. It's usually located near the pump motor or on the control panel.

Step 4: Visual Inspection

Examine the on/off switch for any visible signs of damage, such as cracks or melted/discolored parts.

Step 5: Test Continuity

Use a multimeter set to the continuity setting. Place one probe on one terminal of the switch and the other probe on the other terminal:

- If the meter beeps or displays a low resistance value (usually below 100 ohms), the switch is likely conducting and working correctly.

- If the meter doesn't beep or displays a high resistance value (usually above 1000 ohms), the switch may be faulty and need replacement.

Step 6: Replace If Faulty

If the on/off switch is faulty, replace it with a new one of the same type and rating. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for switch replacement.

Step 7: Restore Power

After replacing the switch (if needed), restore power to the pool pump by turning on the circuit breaker or fuse. Test the pump to ensure it's functioning correctly.

Note: If the on/off switch checks out fine, there could be other issues preventing the pump from starting, such as a malfunctioning motor, capacitor, or wiring problem. Consider consulting with a qualified pool technician if the problem persists.
