Type IV PFDs: Throwable devices. These devices are designed to be thrown to a person in the water and provide buoyancy until help arrives. They are typically horseshoe-shaped or ring-shaped and are made of a buoyant material such as foam or plastic. Type IV PFDs are not recommended for use by non-swimmers or in rough water conditions.
