8 yr old running back

Question
I have a 8 yr old running back on my team.  He is the fastest 8 yr old I have seen, he is the hardest hitting on the team and he knows a lot about football for his age.  but in the game he will not give it his all, he only puts out at 20%.  If he gives it his all he just might grow to be one of the best.  It might be part fear and part insecurity.  How can I inspire him to fight thru his fears and reach for the stars

Answer
Coach D this is a hard question.  I would try to encourage him to do your best everyday in practice and in the game as well.  If you notice him not giving his all, call him out, and ask him why he isn't trying his best.  Also I would try and give him some type of incentive to achieve at his best.  Set some type of goals for him each game to accomplish.  Maybe 3 touchdowns or 150 yards rushing.  If he reaches his goal then reward him with something.  Young kids can sometimes be encouraged through small rewards.  GOOD Luck Coach Noel!
