Montague Fishing Rod Guide Configuration: Understanding Back-to-Back Guides & Tip Guide

Question
Hi,  I have a Montague 67" 2 piece hex bamboo fishing rod. It has got a strange tip guide and 2 guides back to back about halfway up the tip section of the rod. Why are the guides back to back and what is the reason for the strange tip guide.  Thanks,  Anthony

Answer
Anthony
The purpose of having guides on both sides of a rod is to avoid a set - a bend in the bamboo . Bamboo like wood - under pressure - maybe hot and wet will remain the in the shape of pressure.
So if stored leaning, rods may develop a set. Store horizontal if possible. In the old days the guys would say that the set in their rod was caused by hauling in lots of huge fish. That is heavy pressure over a long time on the same side of the rod.
