watching another players putt

Question
Was standing 4' to right and 2' back we both had putts on same line to hole other player was away  took exception to where I was standing asked if I knew anthing about golf etiquette> I know you can't stand directly behind which I wasn't but what is the rule.

Answer
John,

Etiquette is a very important element of the game of golf. There really isn't a rule but simply stated you should stand out of the players view as much as possible. Another way to look at it is this way. Suppose the player putting is the center of a clock. If you stand between the 8 and the 10 of the clock you would be out of view of the player. This is for a right handed putter.

Also make sure to be aware of your shadow.

Thanks,

Michael
