QUESTION: I am a beginner and I am having some problems while floating.Whenever I am trying to float without any support(like holding a bar) I am slowly turning back.I cannot keep my body straight while swimming.Should I make my legs stiff while floating?Please help.

ANSWER: Hello Shreyasi,

I'm not sure what you mean by turning back but your legs should never be stiff when you try to float. It is difficult to float while holding onto a bar. You are better off to use a kickboard or get into shallow water and try floating while placing your face in the water, and holding your breath) with your arms stretched out in front of you at roughly 10 PM and 2 PM if looking at a clock. If your face is out of the water your legs will sink.

QUESTION: Thank you.By turning back I meant I keep on toppling on either my right side or the left side.I cannot keep the body straight.Also I don't understand how should I keep my legs during paddling.Should I keep them straight and use only the toes or bend the legs at the knee?

Sorry for the delay. When swimming you should always use your legs in a relaxed manor (not to straight but not floppy at the knees either. Your best bet is to allow your knees to bend slightly as you kick from your hips.

Also only practice will help you to be able to float without turning one way or the other.
