swimming shoulder workout

Hi
I am 22 year old male. I swim now for 4 months almost every day 1 hour/day. My problem is my shoulders are too narrow and i want to have broad shoulders.Some friend said swimming could help so i started swimming. In first month i built some muscle but then i lost them or they didn't change and my hips just got bigger anyway my shape is worse than the beginning(took 9 kg).My routine is 2 km in one hour in a slow tempo without stopping. I think i can do 2,5 km if i want but probably not more than this. I swim only freestyle. Now i start to lose my motivation for swimming since there is no gain. I need some expert advices: Is there something wrong in my workout? Is it not enough or is it too much ? Should i do sprints or slow tempo swimming without stopping? Should i try any other style than freestyle?(I watch the training of water polo players in pool and they swim with a different style head is always out of water. Maybe this technique makes them so big). Should i try weight lifting instead of swimming? Is it more effective for shoulders swiming and weights together? Or am i too old for this and i have to stay with narrow shoulders for my entire life? Sorry for the long post but i have nobody to answer this questions. Thanks in advance.

All swimming strokes will help build shoulder muscles.  However, you are not going to change your skeletal structure that you already have.  You are just going to gain muscle on your bones.

Unfortunately, swimming is not a sport that will build bulky muscles.  Swimming is an endurance-type sport.  You will tone your muscles and build some mass, but you will not build bulky muscles like you can get from resistance training (weights).

My suggestion for you would be to start utilizing some form of resistance training to build your shoulders.  You will see faster results than you will from swimming.  I don't think that stopping swimming is what you should do.  I just think that if you want "faster" results, resistance training with weights will help out much more.  Get with a trainer (at a gym) and ask them what they would recommend for your desires.

Again, swimming would be great to help tone your muscles.  It's an amazing sport for your overall fitness.  However, swimming is not going to shape your shoulders quickly.

I know that this isn't something you were really expecting to hear.  I hope that this does help though.
