Exhale through nose or mouth?

2016/7/15 11:59:35

Question
Hello.  I'm learning to swim and I find that I am more comfortable exhaling my breath through my mouth while under water rather than through my nose.  I've been told that it is better to master doing it using your nose.  Is this true, and what makes breathing out of the nose underwater better?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Nay,
To be honest, I don't think that there is a true advantage to your nose or your mouth.  I would do what is most comfortable for you.  I competed at the highest levels possible in the sport.  I can't say that I have ever thought about it.  Yes, they teach you those silly things when you learn to swim, but if you are more comfortable with your mouth...GO FOR IT!

In reality, I think I exhale through both my nose and my mouth.  Seriously though, it's not going to make a significant difference either way.  I would go with what is most comfortable for you and concentrate on the more difficult skills.  Swimming is tough enough without worrying about the little stuff.

Best of luck.
Eric
