Walther 7.65

Question

[email protected]
I have an elderly friend that is wanting to sell a Walther 7.65 pistol and I was wondering if you could tell me more about it and the possible value.  The gun is silver or chrome plated and has plastic brown grips.  On the left side it has a Walther banner thent he right it has "Walther Patent Cal 7.65 mm"  There appears to be some writing above this but it is too worn to read.  It also appears tht the right of this it has "Mod PP".  Below the magazine release button near the pin for the trigger guard is "Wa359" There is a symbol above these digits.  On the right side there is a serial number of 334000P stamped on both the slide and the frame.  The right side also has an eagle stamped on the slide bleow the ejection port with a matching eagle directly above it on the barrell.  There is a black flap holster with a spot for a magazine on it.  I have one magazine with the Walther banner and "PP7.65m/m" on it.
My friends husband brought the gun back from Europe after he served in WWII.

Answer
Mike,

This is indeed a Model PP of wartime manufacture.  The Wa 359 and Eagle over "N" stamped on the gun identify it as being manufactured between 1940 and 1945.  The Wa 359 is a military acceptance mark unique to the Walther factory.  The "Eagle over N" is a more generic military mark.  The 7.65 caliber is equivalent to our .32 ACP caliber.

I am assuming the finish is the original and has not been added.  If that is the case, your gun is a 'nickel' finish Model PP which is quite rare.  This makes it impossible for me to give you a specific value, but it is certainly higher than the standard values.

A gun of this type without the nickel finish would be worth approximately $600 in 98% condition.  $375 in 90% condition and $275 in 80% condition, but as I said, the nickel finish is quite rare and probably worth significantly more.

If you are interested in selling it, I'd check out the P-38 Forums at:

www.p38forum.com

There is a section of the forum that deals with Walther PP and PPK pistols.  There would probably be someone over there interested in the gun...

The holster probably adds $100 to the equation if it is in decent shape...

Hope this helps you out...

Regards,

Doug
