bike racks

Question
Hi, I am looking to purchase a hitch style bike rack for my Mitsubishi Outlander. I have done some research but there is too much to look at! My criteria are the following:
1)Good quality (ie- not made of cheap junk that will break or have small annoying parts that break)

2) Allows access to the rear of my car (even when bikes are on the rack)

3) looking for something that can hold at least 4 bikes and that its versatile to hold various frame types.

4) Price does not matter. I would prefer to pay more now than be frustrated later.

THANK YOU!

Answer
Wow, tough call.

I could not agree more on spend a bit now and save in the long run. Given that I would narrow your choices down to three brands: Yakima, Thule, and Saris. I really like the Saris racks, but I will admit that I am biased since I live in Wisconsin and they are made in Wisconsin.

I take it that you have a receiver hitch. If not it would be a good idea since the racks you could then get do not have anything attached to the car - four bikes are heavy and could do some damage to the Mitsu.  And the hitch racks that hold the bikes in trays, not a bar that goes through the frame, are more secure and better for the bikes.

I know that this is a bit vague but I hope I clarified the muddy waters a bit. Again, a tray mount system - one that supports the bikes by the wheels - and sticking with the "big three" and I think you will be happy with your choice.

Thanks!

Tad
