Clips/Clipless- What all is needed?

Question
Hi,
I purchased a road bike at the end of the fall last year (Specialized-Allez) and am considering purchasing clips for my bike. To be quite frank I am not all that knowledgable on bikes in general- I typically just get on and ride. If you could provide me with any insight that would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much.

Answer
To define what we are talking about Clips refer to toeclips that create like a little pocket you put your toe into. This pocket consist of a metal or (more commonly now) a plastic frame and a strap that goes thru the pedal and the frame. Clipless refers to a smaller pedal with a clamp that grabs onto a cleat on the shoe. The clamp works similarly to a ski binding where lateral movement allows you to break out of the clamp.

The advantages of using either clips or clipless is in pedaling efficiency. Because the foot is attached to pedal you get power on the upstroke as well as the downstroke. Clipless provides more power because the show is more firmly attached to the pedal.

I just checked the Specialized site and There are many versions of the Allez. The lower priced versions come with platform pedals and clips. As you go up the line you get clipless.

If you want to use toeclips, you can get plastic ones with straps very cheaply, that's all you would need. If you want to go clipless, you might have to replace your pedals and buy road shoes. That's looking at $150-$200 or more

I rode with toeclips for a very long time, resisting using clipless for a long time. Abouyt 2 years ago, I saw a friend riding with sandals that were clipless compatible. I liked the idea so much that I finally made the switch. Using clipless has made a significant difference.
