25 hp Johnson outboard

Question
I have an older 25 hp johnson. I have to pump primer bulb every few minutes to keep the engine from killing. New fuel pump and primer line. Any ideas? The tank doesn't have a vent that I can find.

Answer
Hi Nate

Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question. Although I'm not a mechanic, here's food for thought.

Would the color of your older 25 hp Johnson be green?

Did you check the condition of the diaphram in the carb?

Could a fuel line be clogged or have a loose connection?

Is the primer bulb or the fuel connector to the engine defective?

All fuel tanks require venting. Usually, the vent would be on top of the fuel filler cap, and to open, it needs to be turned counter clock-wise. It's a one-way vent that may be defective, so check it out carefully.

Failing all else, have a qualified marine mechanic do the trouble-shooting.
