Career

Question
I am interested in persuing a career in boating.  I don't know where to begin.  I wanted to know if you can give me some pointers to point me in the right direction.

Answer
Hi Jonathan

Your question is rather vague as to which area of "boating" you would like to pursue, but here's a few suggestions.

Consider joining the Coast Guard - they offer quite a career and provide free education. As well, you get to travel. Retirees enjoy a number of options, such as doing condition and valuation and damage surveys for insurers, or becoming a marine insurance adjuster, or an independent consultant for recreational hull design/construction, accident investigation/reconstruction, or join the marine division of a police force.

Are you interested in drawing? Have you thought about becoming a designer of large passenger/cargo ships? What about a specialist in security for a transportation company or at an airport or wharf?  Have you considered becoming a harbour master at a municipal or private marina? Think about becoming a salvager of ships.

There are so many options available to you. It's just a matter of deciding which direction interests you most.

Safe Boating
Ron
