trotting on tarmac road

2016/7/15 11:21:18

Question
hello sir, i believe that it is good to exercise racehorses on tarmac road to make their joints fit. am i correct?

Answer
I do not see this as a good idea since a horse may slip and fall on this surface. I would recommend keeping on a grass or well maintained dirt or sand surface. Speed work and racing will ultimately condition a horse's joints. There may be trainers who practice the method of jogging a horse on tarmac, but I have not heard of this in the U.S.A.
