ANSWER: Hi Gopal,

1 Riders sometimes just get tired of dieting or decide to give up racing and they start to put on weight naturally.

2  The number of horses in a race depends on how many were nominated (entered) and how many accepted (paid up the nomination fee)

3.  Not sure what this means.

4.  This is really a whole discussion rather than an answer. There are a lot of variables to consider.

5.  What is showing in the pic is a tongue tie. This is used to flatten the tongue so the horse does not get its tongue over the bit. Some horses do it and it makes them hard to steer and also pulling on the reigns can damage the horses tongue.

6.  I have not heard these terms before, they may be local terms used.

7.  Just what it says, the jockey rides correctly and is tidy in everything that he/she does.

8.  Handicappers comments are notes made on a handicap sheet to describe why the handicapper has awarded a certain weight to a horse.

9.  Never heard this term before.

10.  Usually running rails are made of extruded aluminium. It is light to shift around, can be made in longer lengths, is strong and does not break. Aluminium replaced wooded rails.

11.  Hood are usually made of leather or synthetic matting material.

Don

5) i mean this one which is attached below the bit rings and behind the chin.

6)sir, i mean, is there any term which really describes a "purposeful manipulated race"??

10)sir, what do you mean by "extruded aluminium"?? sir, did you observe, these rails shine in the night time without lights

11)sir, hope horses feel comfortable with these kind of material the hood made of. when did, blinkers came into existence???

Answer
Hi Gopal,
I do not think a race with less than 7 starters has any special name, it's still a race. In most countries only a win and 2 place dividends are paid when there are less than 7 starters. When racing first started there used to be a lot of match races between just 2 horses.

I see the strap you mean but it does not appear to have any practical purpose. It's not common with racing gear as far as I know but I will take note next time I am at the races.

If the race or the results are 'manipulated' then they would break the rules of racing.

Extruded simply means made in long lengths. Usually the rails are about 10m long. The rails could be painted with iridescent paint to show up better at night.

I don't know for sure but from the time that men first used horses in battle or wars they have sheilded the horses head against attack. The knights of the 13th and 14th century in Europe used face guards to protect their horses and to keep them concentrating on looking forward.

Cheers,
Don
