Assistant trainers license one more question...

Question
QUESTION: I have been around horses all of my life.Have been a groom since 2003.From thoroughbreds in training, galloping, 2 yr olds breaking and training, mares and foals weanlings sales prep lay ups etc. I know alot and want to study for an assistant trainers license.I would make an excellent trainer as well.Question is, are there any free sites on the Internet where I could study specifically on what they would ask me on the test?General horse sense, medication dosage etc.I want to learn as much as I can.Be as knowledgeable as I.I love to learn and I want more!If you know of any sites I would really appreciate it if you could let me know.I have searched alot of places and I guess I'm just not looking in the right places!Thank you for your help in advance. Laura

ANSWER: hi Laura  well you have done your homework, working with and around horses.  the trainers test will ask you a lot of questions about the horse, all about the body of a horse, entering a horse in a race, leg care, study how many bones in a horse , where certain bones are located, the internal system of a horse. equipment you use on a horse in a race. just so many questions to know. if you can work for a trainer , as a asst trainer , you will get first hand experience that you need to know about before you take your test.you also have a barn test to take. you sound like you have lots of horse experience, but you need the actual everyday experience working with a trainer to get to know how he handles the everyday problems that will come up in the barn and on the race track. how he enters a horse in a race, weight allowance you need to take ,etc.  . i know you will make a great trainer in the future because you have the will and drive to do get done what you need to do so you can take that trainers test. i worked for a trainer as his asst trainer  for a year before i thought about taking my trainers test. i don't think there is any place that will have the answers for the trainers test, that comes with experience. i hope this helps you. YOU CAN ALSO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HBPA AT THE RACE TRACK AND ASK THEM ABOUT TAKING YOUR TRAINERS TEST. good luck in your endeavor . thanks ED HESS

QUESTION: You mentioned working with a trainer to see how he handles everyday problems etc.I have tried that and everytime they start to feel intimidated by me and they get funny. So I'm always stuck 'eavesdropping' and learning from myself and watching what is going on.Any advise on how to go about asking a trainer what I want and if they could possibly teach me?I always ask politely and listen and share information to get feedback, but it always ends the same. They turn away from me and make excuses.Do you understand where I am coming from?I'm a top notch groom everywhere I go and everyone sees it.i often get alot of envy/jealousy from every direction, instead of approval, appreciation, and acknowledgement.Sorry if I seem 'weird' but this is a big dilemma I have. This is always where I seem to get stuck/stopped.Like I can't move forward.Thanx again for time and advice and I look forward to hearing from you soon.Laura

Answer
hi - well you can always go to the race track and ask for a job in a racing stable and go from there. once the trainer see's that you are a good groom, he will give you more jobs around the barn to do. you need to tell the trainer that you would love to become a asst trainer for him , but only after you get a foot hold in the stable. you might need to work a year or so to get a chance to become a asst trainer. a good trainer will know that you are seriously interested in furthering you skills and give you a chance to prove it. it takes time and patients  to get ahead in this world. i know you will do good , you just need to be patient . hope this helps  ED HESS
