Question
QUESTION: I have been given a 7yr old thoroughbred. This is a NZ horse by the name of Turtle. He was born in 2001 and I have his pedigree. I need to find out who the previous owners are. He has a hoof problem and I need to know his medical history on it. He does not have a tatoo on his lip but he does have a brand on his rt hip. He was retired from the racetrack at 4 years old. His sire is Yachtie and his dam is Djebel Song. Any kind of info would be helpful.

ANSWER: Hi Paula,
I have checked www.arion.co.nz which I use for reference and can not find your horse Turtle. His dam, Djebel Song 1994 by Pompeii Court is there but no sign of your boy.
The next place to look is the stud book at NZ Thoroughbred Racing (www.nzracing.co.nz).
It would help if you can give them his brands.

If that fails then I would contact NZ Bloodstock who will know the owner of Yachtie who will no doubt have a record of the owner of the dam, who in turn will know the original owner of your horse.
Sorry I cant do this research for you as I am away on holiday and do not have my books with me.

Regards,
Don
PS. Did Turtle race in NZ or Australia? If it was Aus that would explain why he does not show up.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: We did find out a little more on Turtle. He was raced in Belgium and England. He had his maiden race in England where he had an accident. His jockey ran him too close to the inside rail and his foot hit the rail causing him to go down and the jocky was killed. Otis Collins is the owner and the jockey was his wife. I can not find any articles on that accident. Would there even be one since it was a maiden race?

Answer
Hi Paula,
So that explains why he did not show up on our racing or breeding charts.
There will be an official report in the Jockey Club files relating to the accident. It would probably be available to you if you ask.
To get the contact address you could look them up on www.jockeysite.com
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Don
