Inbreeding

Question
Hello, Although I am not new to the breeding of horses, I have recently been offered a very cheap breeding to a stud which is owned by my Thoroughbred mare's previous owner. However, breeding to him would give me a lot of inbreeding. I know inbreeding in the thoroughbred industry is not uncommon, but how much is too much? The foal produced would be inbred 4x4 to Raise A Native, 4x4 to Gold Digger and 4x4 to Northern Dancer-- Is this too much, or safe?

Answer
Hi Alyssa,
This is a bit beyond my area of expertise, however I have somme suggestions that may help.
I would pose the question to your local breeders group. They like to talk endlessly about the merits of cross breeding and may well find your problem an interesting one. The thing that makes it so is the suggestion of quality already in the bloodline.
People tend to take more interest when Northern Dancer is represented.
You could also email this enquiry to the main breeder groups around the country.
You will find contacts for the main ones on www.jockeysite.com
Hope this is some help.
