How many horses race in the Melbourne Cup (not including emergencies)?

Hi Justen,
         You can get all the info you need from www.victoriaracingclub.com.au. The Cup is run over 3200m (2 miles) and is always held on the first Tuesday in November.
The field will be made up of 24 runners altho in the past up to 38 horses have started.
If you like racing and have not been to a Melbourne Cup then put it on your 'must do before I die' list.
I have been twice and have made a big thing of it by attending all 4 days of the cup carnival each time.
This year we think the winner will be Zipping.
