Beginner's Guide to Barrel Racing: Getting Started in Kentucky

Question
How can I go about learing to barrel race? Where would I start and who should I look for? I just moved to Kentucky and always wanted to learn but don't know where to start? How did you start? I would really like to hear your experiences if you have some time? Thank you..

Answer
Marcy,

Thank you for your question. It is great that you want to learn to barrel race. It's a fun sport, but it does require a lot of work and dedication. Your first step is to get a trained barrel horse. The reason that I say that you should get a horse that is already trained is that he/she will help you to learn how to barrel race. It is very difficult for two beginners to learn together. I'm sure there are plenty of barrel racers in Kentucky from whom you could get advice. I suggest finding someone who is an experienced barrel racer who might be able to give you lessons.

I have been raised around horses and rodeo for my whole life. That is how I got started. I have been very fortunate to have my dad who taught me everything that I know about horses. I have ran into various other helpful people around they way who helped to "show me the ropes." There are people around who are willing to help.

Good luck with your barrel racing career and let me know how it turns out! :)

Sincerely,
Bobbie Taylor
